What Is Shockwave Therapy Therapy?
Shockwave therapy involves using compressed air to fire a pellet back and forth within an applicator that looks like a wand or gun. The energy created is transferred through the end of the applicator and into the tissue to promote reparative processes.
The shockwave treatment lasts for 1200 to 1500 beats and the intensity can range from 0.3BAR – 8.0BAR. The shockwave contacts the patients at 15 times a second for most injuries.
Our Oakville Chiropractors and Physiotherapists use Shockwave treatment to help treat bones, tendons and muscles. It is most commonly used to reduce pain and improve mobility.

Radial shockwave therapy is a non invasive treatment that uses a pneumatic gun to hit an bullet against the injured area of the patient to allow for greater healing.
Shockwave therapy is great for both chronic and acute injuries. However, shockwave is the gold standard for chronic injury treatment.
No, but it can be uncomfortable. There is an intensity control on the shockwave and treatment is performed at the patient level of pain tolerance between 0.3BAR and 8BAR.
Radial shockwave is good for all types of injuries. Including, tears, tendinitis, tendinosis, muscle tension and calcific build up.
Shockwave can treat lots of conditions. Some of the best results with shockwave occur in patients diagnosed with bunions, Morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, heal spurs, ligament injuries of the knee, medial meniscus tears, hip labral tears, rotator cuff injuries, tennis and golfers elbow and carpal tunnel…just to name a few!
No, shockwave therapy is a mechanical form of treatment using high energy waves.
The greatest feat of shockwave is its ability to allow your body to build new blood vessels. It is the only modality that stimulates angiogenesis or new blood vessel growth. This is substantially important in healing, especially chronic injuries.
The focus shockwave has a much deeper penetration and usually costs much more than a radial shockwave treatment.
The actual shockwave treatment take 1 to 2 minutes. However, some clinics do modalities and heat to prime the affected area before shockwave treatment is administered. This pre-shockwave treatment allows for much better results with the shockwave therapy.
Most shockwave treatment costs between $120 and $300 dollars a visit. The most affordable shockwave therapy in Ontario is $75.00 per visit from Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre.
There are no serious side effects from Shockwave Therapy. There may be some temporary skin reddening or discomfort for 1 -2 days following treatment. We treat within the patients pain tolerance. Dr. Steve will recommend icing after your shockwave treatment.
