What are compression socks?
Compression socks improve circulation and reduce abnormal swelling in the legs which decreases the strain on tissues in the leg. The Medical Stockings are most likely covered by your extended health coverage at work. Come by for a free fitting for compression stockings or compression socks and we will contact your insurance to firm up what is needed for optimized coverage. Most plans, not all, are allotted between 1 to 6 pairs of medical grade compression socks a year.
For compression stockings and socks, the greatest amount of compression is in the foot, then reduces slightly in the ankle and ends with even less compression around the calf. The graduated compression helps push the fluid upwards, out of the feet and back towards your heart! Depending on where your issues are, you may benefit from a different length of compression garment. Our clinic offers knee high, thigh high and panty hose stockings/socks to make sure all your needs are met. Our staff will help you chose the right pair for your specific needs, and make sure they are fit to perfection.

How do compression stockings & compression socks work?
Oakville Compression stockings and compression socks are a useful tool to treat a variety of conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower and upper leg. Compression socks work by providing graduated pressure that helps to prevent edema (swelling). By providing pressure around the foot, ankle and calf, compression stockings prevent the tissue from being able to fill with fluid, hence their ability to prevent swelling.
Our Oakville chiropractors have a couple treatment options for swollen legs and feet. Book with on of them today and see if they can help!
Compression socks can also help compress leaky valves in the veins, which contribute to fluid building up around the ankles and feet. People who spend all day on their feet are forcing their veins to fight gravity all day. Sometimes this extra strain on the veins causes them to become stretched and makes the valves leaky. The greatest amount of compression is in the foot, then reduces slightly in the ankle and ends with even less compression around the calf.
Does my insurance cover compression socks?
Most extended insurance plans cover some, if not all, of the cost of medical stockings or compression stockings. If your spouse has coverage, we can help you coordinate insurance payments so that the two plans collectively cover 100% of the costs (in most cases).
Unfortunately, we can only directly bill your insurance if you are with Green Shield. In most cases to get your private insurance to cover compression stockings you will require a medical doctor’s note stating a diagnosis, compression rating of at least 20 – 30mmhg and that the medical stockings are for everyday use. If you have any questions contact us and we would be happy to walk you through the process.

Compression socks are tight socks used to remove fluid from a persons feet and lower leg. They are a gradient sock, that start tights on the foot and loosens up as the sock goes up the leg. A persons leg and foot must be measured for a proper fit.
Compression socks can be worn all day. A properly fitted compression sock will help limit the fluid accumulation in the patients foot/lower leg.
Compression socks come in all shapes and sizes. To get the right fit, at least 3 measurements need to be taken.
1. The foot size.
2. The lower ankle/calf diameter.
3.The upper calf/lower knee diameter. If the patient needs thigh high compressions a measurement at their mid and upper leg will also be taken.
Not really, if the socks are fitted by a professional and the patient has no underlying conditions the socks will work great. The one downside at the beginning of wearing compression socks will be that the patient has to urinate more as the fluid gets pumped out of the body.
Possibly. Contact your insurance provider to see if compression stockings are covered by your extended insurance plan. In most cases you will need an MD not and the compression on the socks will have to be a minimum of 20mmhg to 30mmhg.
MMHG stands for millimeters of mercury. Its basically the compression and the gradient. The foot is at 30mmhg and the calf is at 20mmhg allowing for the sock to compress the fluid out of the toot into the calf.
